I'm missing four songs, though. If anyone could help me with those, I'd very much appreciate it:

Tony Hatch & Jackie Trent: Morning Dew
The Audience: Eye to Eye

I also have some remarks about themes that I think can be discerned in the lyrics, but I think I'll put that in an extra post, so that anyone who's really afraid of spoilers can avoid it. It's not that spoilery, really, just speculation based on very flimsy evidence, but I know some people are a bit paranoid about spoilers, so, better safe than sorry. :-)

In the October edition of Q Magazine they feature the reader results of what they voted to be the 100 Greatest Songs Ever. Bowie's Life on Mars was voted at No. 45. They give an nice little summary and some history about how the song was written (and even mention a certain recent BBC TV drama!).

The mystery music has been found! Yorkio posted over at The Railway Arms with the following information about the tune substituted for Wild Horses in episode 4:

It's Frankie Miller's "I Can't Change It" from the Once In A Blue Moon album, also available as a 79p download from the iTunes store as part of The Very Best of Frankie Miller.

This is rather sad, though (from the official Frankie Miller website bio)

Frankie continued to become an in–demand writer on the country music scene and had started on a new project to record with Joe Walsh and Nicky Hopkins when he suffered a massive brain heamorage in New York on August 25th 1994. It should have killed him but he has shown remarkable courage to claw his way slowly back to health, after spending 15 months in hospital. With massive support from his partner Annette, Frankie is learning to walk and talk again and has even written a new song with lyricist Will Jennings called “Sun Goes Up Sun Goes Down“

Reading that makes me want to buy his CD to show support...

* I have to admit I cheated on this one and shazamed it - dial 2580 and point your phone at the speaker and 30 seconds later you get a text message back telling the name of the track. It's like magic!

And a great shame about Frankie Miller - one of the great blue-eyed soul singers who never got anything like the recognition he deserved.

Last night I was watching the second episode (To Say I Love You) of the first series of Cracker. At about the 30 minute mark, what should I hear but...

the same (exactly the same) music clip which is played instead of "Wild Horses" on the dvd versions of Life on Mars! Fitz is sitting in his garden, playing his radio late at night and annoying the neighbors, and there it is!

Alas, there was NO music credit at the end.

The fact that it appeared on a tv show, the exact same amount of music, and no credit given at the end, leads me to wonder if this is a copyright-free, or very cheap to use, standard clip available for use as background music.

It's too bad because I really like what I've heard and would gladly buy the entire song.

At the very least, it tells us the music was recorded no later than 1993, when this was filmed.

It sounds so close to something I should know...Van Morrison, or The Commitments...but not quite. A bluesy, soul sound. I'm going to try to extract a clip of the audio from the dvd tonight, since it's a US dvd I can play it on my computer. Then at least I'll have something to play for people, as I continue to try to find out what it is.

Can anyone here help me with "Walkaway" by Cast, the song that was used in The Lakes?

I tried to buy it from iTunes, but of course they don't have it. I don't actually want a whole CD of Cast.

For anyone who is interested, Rock Family Trees is on tonight on BBC4 at 10:40pm. It features The Move, who were fronted by Roy Wood - who later went on to form Wizzard.

NB Check the listings in your area - I got this info from Yorkshire addition of TV Choice!

I've now gone through all the episodes on DVD again watching them with the subtitles on (which is very useful for identifying songs!), and I think I've spotted all the tracks that have changed - just not what they've all changed to!

Okay - I give up - I can't recognise the track that replaces Wild Horses, on the DVD. Instead I've put the subtitles on (they sometimes even tell you the song - but not in this case), and wrote them down. It's probably something really, really famous, and I'm being dense in not knowing it! The lyrics are behind the cut.

So. I've been taking a look or two at the lyrics to the songs used in the show (TV version, not DVD version, although we should probably take a look at those, too, as soon as we've found out what they are), and it seems to me that there are 'Sam songs' and 'general 1973/other characters songs'. The two most obvious Sam songs are, of course, Life On Mars and White Room, but quite a few of the others also seem to relate more or less directly to him and his situation, either in part or even more or less completely. There are common themes to these songs - family/parents, love/feeling, fighting, and a somewhat fuzzy field of dreaming/sleeping/dying themes, especially. I've focused on the latter for the moment, as it seems to hold clues for the whole 'mad/in a coma/back in time' question. So, here's a list of all the lines I could find that seemed to relate to sleeping/dreaming/hallucinating/dying/out-of-body experiences/reality and unreality/afterlife/heaven and hell etc. I'm not sure they're all from 'Sam songs' - some may be from 'general 1973 songs' - but I think most of them are.
